The Galapagos Islands are known for: being islands of inspiration for Darwin's theory of evolution and are well known for their legendary brave animals. And even then, it just reveals part of the story. One of the most volcanically active areas in the world is the Galápagos Archipelago.
Interesting facts about the Galapagos Islands
The Spanish archbishop of Panama, Tomas de Berlanga, described the archipelago as being "enchanted" when he first saw it because, from a distance, they appeared to vanish amid the mist and fog and the rising tide.
The name "Insulae de los Galopegos" or "islands of the turtles" was given to the islands in honor of their most famous residents, the giant tortoises (Chelonoidis).
"Galopegos" means "Saddle" - Charles Darwin attempted to ride a tortoise. Fray Tomas de Berlanga and his Spanish crew were captivated by the saddleback shelled tortoises, and because of the similarity of the shells to a saddle, they called the archipelago the islands of the "Galapago" tortoises. Even though the "Archipelago de Colon" was its correct name, it was usually referred to as the Galapagos.
There are 21 volcanoes on the Galapagos Islands, 13 of them are considered still currently active.
